Having cataract surgery can feel much less daunting when you know what to expect.

Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed eye procedures, and for suitable patients it can often be completed as a day procedure. This means that the patient is admitted, has the planned procedure, recovers under the care of the clinical team and, when clinically appropriate, returns home later the same day.

At Virida Day Hospital, the patient journey begins before the procedure itself.

Before the day of surgery

Your ophthalmologist and the hospital team will provide instructions specific to your procedure and medical needs.

These may include information about:

  • your arrival time
  • eating and drinking before surgery
  • which medications should be taken or adjusted
  • what documents to bring
  • transport arrangements for after the procedure

It is important to follow the instructions provided specifically to you. Another patient’s instructions may be different.

You may also be asked to bring identification, medical-aid or authorisation documents where applicable, and an up-to-date list of the medicines you take.

Arriving at the day hospital

When you arrive, the team will guide you through the admission process and preparation for your procedure.

This is also an opportunity to confirm important information, ask questions and make sure the clinical team has the information they need before you proceed.

Good care begins with clear communication.

Preparing for theatre

Before surgery, the healthcare team completes the necessary clinical checks and prepares you for theatre.

For many patients, knowing that there is a structured process can make the experience feel much more manageable.

Cataract surgery involves removing the cloudy natural lens of the eye and replacing it with a clear artificial lens, known as an intraocular lens.

Your ophthalmologist will have discussed your individual eye condition, lens options, expected outcomes and potential risks with you before the procedure.

Recovery after cataract surgery

After surgery, patients are monitored in the recovery area.

The clinical team will make sure that you are recovering appropriately and that the relevant discharge criteria have been met before you leave the hospital.

Because this is day surgery, an overnight hospital stay is generally not required when the patient is clinically suitable for discharge.

Going home

Before leaving, you will receive instructions about caring for your eye, using prescribed medication or eye drops, activities that may need to be avoided and when your follow-up appointment should take place.

You should also make sure that your transport home has been arranged according to the instructions given to you.

Recovery is part of the procedure journey too. Following the advice provided by your ophthalmologist and healthcare team is an important part of protecting your eye while it heals.

The full patient journey matters

A successful procedure is not only about what happens in theatre.

It includes preparation beforehand, communication throughout the process, coordinated clinical care, appropriate recovery and clear support afterwards.

At Virida Day Hospital, our goal is to make that journey as organised, professional and patient-centred as possible.

People. Care. Better Days.
